A couple years ago my wife Stacy and I went to my friend Tim's house to see him and hang out just like we had a hundred times before. I'd been out of the country on business and wanted to see people I hadn't seen in a while. The only big difference was that Tim was now married to his Fiancee Julie and I owed him an apology for missing the wedding because of my trip.
When we got there Julie wanted to talk to Stacy and I headed off to find Tim. I found him in the basement playing pool, which was pretty normal for him. There were a few people around chatting and I said some hellos as I came in. Tim was playing with a guy I didn't recognize but who introduced himself as Jeff. Jeff was a pretty intimidating looking guy, a good bit taller than me and muscular. I found out he was a cop.
I apologized to Tim for missing the wedding, trying to explain how important the trip was to my business and feeling more than a bit guilty nonetheless. Tim assured me it was alright and Jeff said it sucked that I missed it and offered that he'd had a great time because he'd hooked up with some 'chick' there that he'd been seeing since.
While there was nothing overly odd about that, we all know guys brag, Tim's reaction was odd. He tried to change the subject and every time Jeff would try to give more information, Tim would change it again. If you knew Tim at all you'd know this is the kind of story he'd usually revel in. At some point I actually told Tim it was OK and said he should let this guy speak.
T hat's when Tim said, "Dammit Mark, I'm pretty sure that 'chick' he's talking about is Stacy."
M y heart skipped a beat. I think I even said, "No, that's not true," or "It can't be!"
Jeff half-apologized, saying "Your wife? Damn, I'm sorry! I had no idea! Blonde chick? About so high?" He indicated her height with a hand. His words said "Sorry," but his eyes just seemed to smirk.
In classic denial, I said, "There's no way it was my wife, you have to be making it up!" Jeff responded that he was sorry if she needed better, but that he had no reason to lie. He warned me that I had best calm myself down.
M y face turn red with embarrassment. The entire room had obviously started listening in on our conversation. Like a fool, I told him to admit he made it up. The stupid thing is, I believed him but thought maybe if he just said it wasn't true, I wouldn't feel so lame, what with everyone staring at me.
When he wouldn't admit it, I took a swing at him. Big mistake. Jeff had easily dodged my fist.
At the same time, Stacy and Julie came down into the room. I heard Stacy say, "Oh, shit!" as I felt his fist in my gut, doubling me over right in front of her!
Stacy ran over and put her hand on his chest. "Please stop," she said.
I felt so embarrassed in that moment that I thought hitting him would make me seem less pathetic. I took another swing and he swatted it away like I was a kid. Then he punched me hard in the face. My lip started bleeding.
Stacy gasped and yelled, "Dammit, Mark! Don't be stupid! You know you can't win!"
H er hands were still on him! One touched his washboard stomach and one rested on his massive bicep. It was too much! I tried hitting him again, with the same completely ineffective result. He punched me in the stomach and across the cheek and I hit the floor pretty hard.
It was hard looking up, seeing the way she looked at him. I swear I could see the desire in her face. I was really rocked by that unmistakable look. Then she said, "Mark, back off! He could really hurt you!" There was a half-smile growing across her face, like she was trying not to laugh.
I started to get up, but he took a step towards me, saying, "Stay down!"
Even as he stepped towards me, I could see her hands remained on him. She was really fondling his muscles. I'd never been more humiliated. I muttered, "OK, let's go."
"I think you've proven you need to cool down. I'm not going anywhere with you! Go home and I'll call you later."
I walked up the stairs, starting to really feel the soreness and could hear her telling him she was sorry about my behavior. The last thing I heard was her thanking him for not hurting me too badly. Then he said something to her and she started laughing wickedly. Then they all started laughing! Even Tim and Julie!
I sat in the car, intending to go home. I didn't know what to do. I sat there for I don't know how long when I saw Stacy come out. Jeff followed her out. I could see her brighten when she turned to him, making some kind of joke and giggling, then touching his arm before getting into his car. Once inside his car, she kissed him. They kissed and seemed ready to tear each other's clothes off.
I started at the steering wheel and sobbed, t he swelling and taste of blood on my lips.
